Polyphenols as a Therapeutic Option for the Treatment of Diabetes

Despite scientific developments in the area of diabetes, including improved healthcare facilities and better literacy rates, diabetes mellitus (DM) is still considered a health emergency. According to the last estimates of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), in 2019, 463 million people between 20 and 79 years old were estimated to have DM. This number is projected to rise to 578 million by 2030 and to 700 million by 2054. DM is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by impaired insulin secretion, defects in insulin action, or a combination of both factors. As insulin is a blood glucose-lowering hormone, these defects result in chronic elevated levels of glucose in blood—hyperglycemia. Despite the antidiabetic therapeutic options currently available, new, effective and safe interventions are urgently required.
Polyphenols are plant secondary metabolites and are, therefore, thoroughly present in the human diet. Interestingly, it has been reported that long-term consumption of diets rich in polyphenols has a protective effect against several diseases, including diabetes mellitus.

This webinar will provide new insights about the potential antidiabetic activity of polyphenols, and will include the discussion of representative research studies. The Special Issue under this same theme, "New Trends in Polyphenols and Health", which will be published by the open access journal Molecules, is open for submissions. Marisa Freitas (MF) completed her PhD degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2010, in the Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Porto. Currently, she is Assistant Researcher at LAQV-REQUIMTE - Associate Laboratory for Green Chemistry, working at the Laboratory of Applied Chemistry of Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Porto. Her scientific background is supported by 85 publications in international journals, 5 book chapters, 50 oral communications and 120+ poster communications in national and international conferences, with 3 attributed awards. Her h-index is 31, with about 5000 citations (Scopus). MF participated in several projects funded by national and international funds. She collaborates as reviewer in 20+ journals (Publons - Web of Science Researcher ID AAY-7427-2020) and participates in the Editorial Board of 4 journals (Molecules, Cells, Oxid Med Cell Longev, Braz J Pharm Sci).

Regina Menezes holds a PhD in Biological Sciences—Genetics by Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Heinrich-Heine University of Dusseldorf. Currently Professor at School of Health Science and Technology and Assistant Researcher at CBIOS–Universidade Lusófona’s Research Center for Biosciences & Health Technologies, and Invited Researcher at CEDOC–NOVA Medical School, her research interests are focused on the pathological mechanisms of diabetes, particularly the proteotoxic role of Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP or amylin), and their prevention by dietary polyphenols. Her career achievements include the leadership of 4 research projects, 45 papers in indexed international journals (h-index of 18 by Scopus, counting over 4579 citations), 3 book chapters, an award by the Portuguese Society of Diabetology, and more than 80 oral/poster communications in scientific meetings. She also collaborates as Editor and Reviewer in prestigious journals and as Evaluator Expert for several International Scientific Agencies.

Carina Proença has a BSc degree in Clinical Analysis and Public Health from Faculty of Health Sciences of Fernando Pessoa University, and a MSc degree in Quality Control with a specialization area in Drug Substances and Medicinal Plants, from Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Porto. In April 2021, she has completed her PhD degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences with specialization in Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, at Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Porto. The thesis, entitled "Assessment of the antidiabetic activity of flavonoids: targeting key enzymes involved in type 2 diabetes pathophysiology", was developed under the supervision of Professor Eduarda Fernandes (Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto) and co-supervision of Professor Artur Silva (University of Aveiro) and Professor Pedro Alexandrino Fernandes (Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto). Carina Proença is currently author or co-author of 16 scientific publications (h index of 10, Scopus), and has 28 oral and poster communications presented in national and international scientific meetings. In 2018, she won the best poster award at "MedChem Sicily 2018" in Palermo, and she is the author of one of the most cited papers in the Journal of Enzyme Inhibition and Medicinal Chemistry, published in 2017. Recently, she earned an honourable mention in the Life 2021 PhD Thesis Award. Her research activity is focused on the study of the antidiabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumoral activities of phenolic compounds. Currently, she is a researcher of a funded scientific project at LAQV-REQUIMTE (Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry - Network of Chemistry and Technology).
